Toshiba 32SLV411U 32-Inch 720p LED-LCD HDTV with Built-in DVD Player, Black Review

I purchased this TV to replace an old Toshiba 26" DVD/VCR combo in the bedroom. The 32" flat screen is just the right size for viewing from bed and the HD picture is very clear (even non-HD channels aren't bad). The only downside to the picture is viewing it from a side angle as the color and clarity are best when viewed from the front. The sound quality is also good; and working the remote and navigating the on-screen menus are easy. Like others, I enjoy having the DVD built in so there's no additional equipment. The DVD function works well and the slot on the side provides easy disc insertion and ejection. The TV has a nice, clean stylish look and I recommend it for those interested in a TV for bedrooms, dens, or workout rooms. I was impressed with Amazon's price, partnership with American Express's Rewards, and delivery. Purchasing was very easy using my Reward points and I received fast, free shipping in two days. Setup was quick and easy; and although I haven't tried everything this TV can do, so far I'm very pleased with it.

Samsung LNT4061F 40-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV Review

I have been putting this television through its paces since I got it a few weeks ago, and it is by far the best TV I have ever owned, and very difficult to beat. The image quality is really good, with bright, vivid colors and wonderful detail, especially for 1080i/p content, but even lower-resolution 720p content, which is what's more commonly-available on OTA HD broadcast, looks phenomenal. I also have an Apple TV hooked up to it, and even though most of my content is encoded at either 360p, 480p, or 720p, it still looks quite good.
It does take some time to get the image tuned to perfection, and the default settings are way too bright with too much color saturation boost, and the DNIe processing system actually seems to make some motion effects worse. However, it's very easy to change the settings and see immediately what effect they have.
Like all LCDs it does have some slight black point problems; these aren't noticeable for fullscreen 16:9 content, but for older 4:3 content it's pretty obvious that the black isn't pure black. However, this is again tunable.
The only thing I really notice which is pretty annoying is that it doesn't do a very good job of upscaling 480i content, such as the output from most video game systems, and for DVDs to look good you really need an upconverting player since even with a progressive-scan player there is a lot of visible pixelation when the 480p content is scaled up. It's really more a sad reflection on how the previous "next-generation" video looks downright primitive by today's standards.
The other noticeable issue is that unlike many televisions with digital tuners, it doesn't have an on-screen program guide. My previous TV (also a Samsung) had an on-screen program guide, but it was rather cumbersome to use and took several minutes of scanning every channel to see what was on, and most local channels are pretty inconsistent about providing the EPG information anyway, so it's not really that big of a deal. You can still see the detailed information for the program that's currently showing, so it makes use of EPG, just not as much as it could.
This television's tuner is also quite phenomenal. My previous TV required a very carefully-positioned powered antenna which was very sensitive to every little nearby fluctuation, while with this one I only have a piece of wire jammed into the antenna port and I get perfect reception of every local digital station.
Another nice improvement over Samsung's older HDTVs is that it has a wide variety of zoom modes which allow you to counteract some of the stupider things that TV stations do (for example, pillboxing a letterboxed 16:9 show, which is very common for widescreen non-HD programming). Also, analog TV stations and source inputs get their audio signals upconverted to digital, so you only need to run a single optical audio connection to your stereo (while previous Samsungs required running both analog and digital cables and switching between the two inputs based on source material).
As a PC monitor this is also quite nice. I have a Mac mini hooked up via SVGA cable, and even with an analog signal it looks perfectly sharp and crystal-clear, and of course you can hook it up via HDMI (with a DVI to HDMI adaptor) as well. The only gripe there is that the supported resolutions are a bit quaint - at least on analog SVGA the only 16:9 resolution it supports is 1920x1080, which can be difficult for some older systems to handle. However, on HDMI it should support all the standard HD resolutions.
This television may be more expensive than others in its size class, but it also far outshines every other TV I have seen, aside from the newer LN-T4065, which is nearly identical aside from providing a higher dynamic contrast ratio. If you want to only buy one TV which will last for a long time, it would be hard to go wrong with this one.

Samsung LNT4061F 40-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV Overview

For people looking to step up to full 1080p resolution in a 40-inch flat-panel LCD, Samsung's 2007 model LNT4061FF is a good choice. Besides offering full 1080p resolution the LNT4061F also features a 10,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio for rich blacks and subltle texture display, an 8ms response time panel for smooth motion, hidden side speakers, an NTSC tuner, and 3 HDMI ports.
Compared to other Samsung Models The primary differences between Samsung's LNT4061F and the LNT4065F LCD HDTV is in the contrast ratio and video processing power. The pricier LNT4065F offers a 15,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio compared to this model's 10,000:1 ratio, and also offers full 10bit video processing over this model's 8 bit system. The more expensive model should display finer gradients of shading making for more detail in darker scenes. The video processing difference should ensure smoothermotion in fast moving scenes for the LNT4065F.
Video ProcessingThe Samsung Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) Video Enhancer refines all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNIe improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video inputs. The 3D Y/C digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time to dramatically reduce edge image artifacts while improving transition detail.
Connections
HDMI (version 1.3): 3 (1 CEC cabaple)
Component video: 2 (Y, Pb, Pr)
S-Video input: 1 side/1 rear
A/V inputs: 1 side/1 rear
PC inout: 1
Headphone Jack: 1
USB 2.0: 1

Audio Features High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the speakers built into the TV. SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass through hidden side speakers. TruSurround XT audio adds three audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.
Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into Focus during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
The SRS WOW feature widens the soundstage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.

What's in the box: Samsung LNT4061F 40-inch 1080P LCD TV, remote control, 2 AAA batteries, Power Cord, cleaning cloth, owners manual, warranty card.

JVC LT42P789 42-Inch 1080p LCD with iPod TeLEDock Review

Found this TV at Circuit City for 799 (sale is now over). I have had the TV for a week. I also have a 50 Samsung Plasma, both on HD. The JVC has a better picture on both regular and HD channels. I like the Ipod feature. You need to play with the sound equalizer to get the best quality out of an Ipod without a sound system. Ipod video is fair.
Pros: Picture quality - HD and SD, integration of Ipod, sound is above avg from built in speakers (after tweaking settings).
Cons: Remote does not completely control DVR cable box, manual not clear on initial connection setting particularly for component cables on accessories (requires using the remote in a way that is not obvious).
I would buy this TV again.

RCA Kitchen LCD TV/DVD Combo - 15.4" Under-Cabinet Review

I owned a 9" flip down audiovox unit and was very happy with it but the screen was too small. when I remodeled the kitchen the t.v. was too far from the island where we sit. R.C.A. just came out with a 15" flip down t.v. on sale at Target for $199.00. I installed it and it works great. The stations do not change as quickly as the old flip down, but the picture is beautiful, and the radio and cd/dvd player work great. I love this t.v. I hope it lasts as long as the audiovox

ilo 3200 32 Widescreen LCD HDTV Monitor w/ HDMI" Review

I gave this the lowest rating possible, you just have to do an internet search and see why. This was given to me as a Christmas gift in 2007, bought from Walmart ($700), less than 6 months, I noticed distortion of the picture in upper left hand corner. So, I went on the web looking for causes/problems. Did I ever get a wake up. Warranty not covering, I thought I will make the best of it, my problem was minor compared to others. Well today, turned tv on, heck of a racket after a few minutes, picture is all distorted and tv shuts off. Completely waste of money, Amazon take note of this!!!

Panasonic VIERA G10 Series TC-P54G10 54-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV, Black Review

Edited 2/4/10
I wanted to edit this review with an update. In the past couple of weeks there has been alot of attention on the Panasonic Vierra series plasmas due to many reports of the black levels changing suddenly and getting brighter, degrading the quality of picture. While it apparently has not impacted alot of users, a small portion have noted this, enough to be concerned. You can see the original thread at Avsforums and is being discussed by the original reviewer at CNET (see link below).
While I still stand behind my review below, and I have not experienced this changing black levels, I will be monitoring it and I just wanted people reviewing this TV to know about this potentially troubling issue. Panasonic has issued a statement (in the Cnet link below)stating they auto set the darkness after a period of time to help maintain optimal picture quality over time. In this case, it appears they over compensated. It is a problem and Panasonic needs to step up with a fix.
[...]
-----------Original Review--------
I just got the TCP54G10. STUNNING! A little history. I have been looking at HDTVs for about 3 years, and looking at DLPs originally, then went into this year thinking LCD is the way to go. I'm glad I waited, the inverse relationship between the technology and the prices is right this year.
Before you go buy an HDTV, do yourself a favor, look at this TV, and do some research. Read other reviews. It turned me around to plasma and to this 2009 model plasma from Panasonic in particular. I knew plasmas simply have a superior picture, but I thought the price and issues with plasmas were a detriment.
I came into this dead set on an LCD, most likely from Samsung, that was before I started doing research on the latest Plasmas. Picture quality compared to an LCD, it's simply stunning, LCD has nothing on the plasmas. The Panasonic G10 is nothing short of amazing. The upconvert DVDs on this are amazing, and with our Pioneer Blu-Ray it is jaw dropping.
While I knew the picture quality on plasmas can't be beat in terms of picture quality and the ability to handle fast action in movies or sports with no problem. Versus LCD, Plasmas can handle a nearly infinite color palate so the pictures come out very natural, and you can see all the nuances of colors (like the Planet Earth series). An LCD looks, well, manufactured in terms of the picture, and can only handle so many colors.
I thought the issues of plasmas still outweighed the plusses. But they don't with the new plasmas and especially this G10 series from Panasonic. A) No Buzzing, (we live in Colorado where you would get this at higher altitudes), B) wattage, very comperable to LCDs, negligable difference between LCDs, C) price, better than LCDs. D) The glass on this sest is covered in a very resilient scratch resistant plastic screen. E) Burn in or retention of picture. No problem there with this series. F) Heat, not noticeably hotter than an LCD (this is BIG) G) It is very quiet, I can stand right next to it after an hour of watching a movie and hear no sound from the fans or anything. H) Brightness: User adjustable picture, it seems very bright, and it's antiglare coating on the screen is very good.

Oh the dirty little secret from some of my research. The other manufacturers alledgedly are getting out of plasma, why? Because Panasonic apparently owns the manufacturing plants, and they would have to pay Panasonic, or they have invested in LCD technologies elsewhere and it is thus they have greater margins for LCDs vs plasmas. Thus they can't compete on price. I've seen many reviews now where folks are going plasma vs lcd after their research.
The G10 series handles fast action with no blurriness and no flicker (LCDs have just started to get around this with 120 hz). You'll read about the 600 HZ subfield drive on this latest model and it works fantastic.
(New edit: We just hooked up an over the air digital antenna to watch our local football games, the local channel is in HD. The TV handled this just fine and even displayed it in HD with it's built in digital tuner. We saw no blurrieness in the action at all! THe picture was sharp, and crystal clear in HD.)
In terms of movies and blu-ray: This handles 24p very nicely. For 24p processing, you can choose between a 48hz mode (where you will definately notice flickering), but it defaults to 60hz, with no flickering and few "judders" that we can see, in processing 24p at 60hz.
Some reviews say "well it still doesn't handle "true cinema" 24p because the 60hz is not at the same multiple of the 24fps in which the media was filmed, and thus you won't see the film at quite the original cinematic cadence as in the theater. While this is technically true, we watch 1080p/24p from the source with 3:2 pull down off, beautifully. (Though avforums, as one of the comments to this review pointed out, has more detail on this, and probably more than you would want). Would I notice "true cinema" 24p at 96hz and like it better, not for the price difference between this and the V series (~$600-$700). Plus, for us, the very durable plastic screen on the G10 was more attractive to us versus the glass on the V10.
While I don't think most users will want to get too involved in the weeds with this, for a great simple explanation of this 1080/24p see a great explanation at Cnet: [...]
For an excellent review of the Panasonic V10 the step up from the G10, and this discussion of 24p processing, see Krueger's review here at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1P7WSX9L0J94W/ref=cm_cr_pr_cmt?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B002C8LX6S&nodeID=#wasThisHelpful
He has the V10, and while it is also an excellent Plasma, according to him, the differences between seeing 24p at 96hz (a multiple of 24 frames per second, allowing the original cadence of the film to be maintained) vs the 60hz processing with the G10 is not a huge difference in viewing, you are getting a stunning picture either way. (BTW, those looking at LCDs, just because an LCD can refresh at 120 hz, a multiple of 24, I have seen in AV forums that this doesn't mean the set can handle 24p at that rate. You must look at the more technical details for the 24p processing).
Suffice to say, the G10 handles blu-ray action stunningly, and 24p just fine at the 60hz. We have the Pioneer BDP-51FD BonusView Blu-ray Player plugged straight into this with the HDMI cable (which for a blu ray player is a fantastic player). No Issues. We are running straight 1080/24p from it. No flickers, no blurriness, no jaggies or artifacts that we have seen. I'm hard pressed to see any "juddering" in large pan shots either (i.e. Batman Dark Night). Stunning clarity. This plasma is nice and bright (plus you can adjust the picture in alot of areas, but perhaps not as much as some videophiles may like), and the deep blacks are stunning with little shadowing (i.e. loss of detail) that we can see. It does have a THX certified display setting, which may be too dark for many users, but this can be adjusted. You also have a custom setting where you can set the basic picture settings to your taste, which should be plenty for the average user, though again, it doesn't have some of the more detailed settings available that some videophiles may like.Bottom line, from someone who was dead set on an LCD: this turned me around to an even greater picture with plasma. For us the G10 is a stunning TV, you can't go wrong. It gets very positive reviews from all that I have read. We LOVE it. Panasonic also has great reliability history. We looked at Samsung but they looked like they had some issues with their sets that Panasonic doesn't have in the G10 series. We love the G10, and are extremely happy with our decision to wait! Both the G10 and the step up V10 are both stunning TVs, and easily in the top TVs for 2009, you won't go wrong with either of them.
On shipping from Amazon, fantastic experience. The shipper called ahead, worked out a time, TV arrived 1 day earlier than estimated, they brought the tv down to our home theatre room in our finished basement, setup the TV, put it up, plugged it in, checked it out at a high level, offered to take the packing material away. A+ service.

Peerless 10 - 22 Inches Articulating Wall Arm Review

I recently bought and installed this in my basement, attaching it to my Samsung 226BW 22" LCD. Short version:
- PROS: Preassembled for quick installation right out of the box, great build quality, sits close to the wall when collapsed or extends out more than a foot, ability to rotate display a minor amount to correct for imperfect leveling.
- CONS: Color is not the same as in product shot (not really a con per se, but...). Otherwise, none.
>> Build quality
The unit comes preassembled and is of very solid build quality. The mount, while not incredibly heavy, feels solid and not like cheap lightweight metal. You can adjust the tension on all the joints if you like, but I actually didn't find it necessary - everything was pretensioned so that the joints were somewhat stiff but moveable, which is exactly what I wanted.
>> Installation
> Attaching the mount to the wall
Installation was very easy, though it turned out I didn't have a stud anywhere nearby my desk (lousy lying studfinder!!). So instead, against recommendations, I put in a couple of drywall anchors and attached the mount to the wall with two wood screws that I had (the included screws are very large). I was a bit worried about whether the anchors could handle the load, but after giving the mount a few tugs, I could feel that it wasn't going anywhere, particularly since my LCD is only 10 pounds.
> Attaching the LCD to the mounting plate
After attaching the mount to the wall, I put a couple of screws in the top threads on the back of my monitor, and then hung the monitor onto the LCD plate via the teardrop-shaped holes. I then tightened the screws and put the screws in the bottom holes as well.
> Final adjustments
To finish up, I threaded the cables through the cable channels and replaced the plastic covers over the channels, which slide into place. Then I just adjusted the monitor by pulling it and turning it the way I wanted it. Note that one of the great features of this particular mount is that you can adjust the monitor not only to tilt forwards or backwards and side to side, but you can also rotate the monitor a minor amount clockwise or counterclockwise, in case you didn't install the mount perfectly level or, in my case, you installed the mount level but the floor/desk is not level. This is a feature that was surprisingly absent from a number of other mounts I looked at.
One thing to note is that I got the black version, and it doesn't look like the picture in the product shot above. Whereas above it looks like the mount is has a dark titanium metal finish, it's actually a solid black powder coat, which matches better with my black monitor than the titanium would have.
Bottom line: this is a great LCD mount. I'm very happy with it.
EDIT: It's now September 9, 2009, and it's been more than a year since I first bought this mount (two of them, actually). They have held up beautifully - the powder-coated metal is still in perfect condition, the joints are still nice and stiff, with no sign of loosening. I moved to a new office recently where I was able to screw the mounts into studs with #10 2" wood screws, and now the mounts feel like they could easily accommodate a 30" screen, let alone my 20" and 22" LCD's. You can tell that these things are going to last a lifetime. Highly recommended.
